Q&A about the Freelance Movement petition:

Is this a Wolt petition?

  • No, this petition is led by the trade association Freelance Movement and is actively encouraging all freelancing platform workers, including couriers, to exercise their democratic right by voicing their concerns directly to the EU Parliament

How are you involved in this petition?

We are sharing information about the petition with our courier partners, ensuring they are aware of the opportunity to express their desires for the protection of freedom and flexibility within the Platform Work Directive. Last spring, 82% of Wolt courier partners told us that the Platform Work Directive should not change anyone’s status from self-employed to employed against their own will. This is why we wanted to let them know about this petition.

  • We are members of the trade association, joining forces with various other platforms and associations from across the platform work and freelancing industry.

What is Freelance Movement?

  • Freelance Movement is a trade association made up of platforms and associations representing various sectors within the platform work industry.

Why are you sharing information about this petition?

  • We believe in keeping our courier partners informed about developments that can directly impact their work. In an EU-wide survey conducted last spring, courier partners expressed their feeling that they had not been heard by policy makers and a resounding 88% of courier partners agreed that the Platform Work Directive should protect elements of freedom and flexibility that they currently have as self-employed. In response to their wishes, we are actively listening and supporting them in effectively conveying these concerns to policymakers.

Are you forcing your courier partners to sign the petition?

  • No, we want to make it clear that we are not forcing anyone into signing the petition. Our role is solely to inform individuals about the opportunity to be heard.

What is Wolt’s view of the PWD?

  • We see the EU’s initiative as a huge opportunity to bring long-awaited clarity across Europe and improve platform work for everyone.

  • At the same time, to be truly successful, the directive needs to reflect what the platform workers themselves want. Right now, it looks like platform workers are not involved enough while they are very aligned on what they value and hope.
